Updated ideas

We would like to make more images (related to the Waste Land poem),using the movement of text and also mixing it with the dance movie we already shoot before.
For the sound effect, we will definitely include the English version of the poem.

We will make sure with the Skyp and get connected with a dancer. The the piano will be surrounded by 3 screens: 1st one for the image of a dancer (right side), 2nd one for the text of the poem (left side), 3rd one for the image of ‘loneliness’ (in the middle, facing the piano)

I am learning so much while I am participating the final project and I must say that I am very excited for the progress that we are making. My other team members are truly wonderful and inspiring that I can not wait to see how our final product will come out later.

This is the one we played in the class on Tuesday. Piano improvisation, 'loneliness' image and sound effect of the poem.

Waste Land By T.S Eliot

T.S. Eliot (1888–1965). The Waste Land. 1922.

The Waste Land (in English)

I. THE BURIAL OF THE DEAD
APRIL is the cruellest month, breeding Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing Memory and desire, stirring Dull roots with spring rain. Winter kept us warm, covering Earth in forgetful snow, feeding A little life with dried tubers. Summer surprised us, coming over the Starnbergersee With a shower of rain; we stopped in the colonnade, And went on in sunlight, into the Hofgarten, And drank coffee, and talked for an hour. Bin gar keine Russin, stamm' aus Litauen, echt deutsch. And when we were children, staying at the archduke's, My cousin's, he took me out on a sled, And I was frightened. He said, Marie, Marie, hold on tight. And down we went. In the mountains, there you feel free. I read, much of the night, and go south in the winter.

황무지 (The Waste Land) (in Korean)

Loneliness

For our final project, we wanted to use materials that we have been learning in the class this semester. We decided to make our project based on ‘Loneliness’. Our first plan was putting the image, a dance and music together in one performance. And Youngjoo came up with a brilliant idea that making a sound-recording of T.S.Eliot`s ‘Waste land’ in Korean and Chinese. So it was going very well until we hit the problem with Skype connection with our dancer. After spending 2 hours on this, we could not hold the dancer any longer that we just wanted to record the dancer`s movement itself. (we could use them as the part of our image later)
After all, I improvised on the piano with the images and the sound-effect of T.S.Eliot`s ‘Waste land’. I was so inspired by following the movement of the image and the text of this beautiful poem to improvise the ‘Loneliness’ on the piano. It was definitely something to think about in my near future that I could do this in one of my concert!

Dinu Ghezzo Retirement Concert

My experience in Dr.Ghezzo`s Retirement Concert was truly extraordinary. Being out there, setting up all the equipments and wires(!), and taking a full responsibility of running a camera during a live performance were definitely different from just learning it from the class. Obviously, I am still beginner at internet2 and I was worried about my mission(?) that if I could run a camera without any mistake. I had to share a charger for the camera with Kay (another camera person) and we were making sure that the camera would not run out of battery during the performance. I was very excited using the headset to communicate with our crew, it was something that I never experienced before (and maybe in the near future..). It was very real and we were updating each other`s position and preparation in the backstage. It was a pity that we had some problem with the connection to UCI and we could not see much of them, I guess we learned that we need to have a back-up plan when we prepare this kind of a live event.
I feel very lucky to be part of this event and it was such a pleasure working with our crew who were willing to help each other`s and well-cooperated.

Dual Live Performance over Internet2

To display the capabilities of Internet2 for the faculty at the University of Notre Dame, Carolyn Plummer and her twin sister Kathryn at Vanderbilt University performed a dual live performance. Carolyn is an accomplished violin player and her sister Kathryn is an accomplished viola player. When the two combined their instruments across Internet2, it created a beautiful way to enjoy the benefits of Internet2 and the performers' abilities. Maybe for the next performance, they could include an orchestra from different area and play a gorgeous Mozart Concertante for the violin and viola!
